Our district only has a few things in writing that address school-community relationships. One thing that I found that addresses school-community relationships is within our district improvement plan. One of the goals is to increase parental involvement. We also do not have a public relations department/spokesperson. Our superintendent speaks to the media when necessary. The other written policy is within the superintendent's job description where it addresses building a relationship with the community and the board and speaking to the media, but it is just a few bullets and nothing very specific.
Our district does several things to improve school-community relationships: Personal visits to local businesses, parent newsletters, district newsletters, school and district websites, parent-teacher conferences, parent-teacher compacts, PTOs, Site-Base Teams, Parent Portal (parents have access to real-time attendance, tardies, grades, behavior, scheduling, etc.), Open House, Meet the Teacher Night, Transition Night, Parade, etc.
We do several things to build a strong school-community relationship, but it is not where it needs to be. Hopefully through my internship, I can help the district improve in this area by creating a document to address our needs in this area.
